Ezra Introduction

Synopsis:
The book of Ezra begins where 2 Chronicles ends. King Cyrus of Persia has issued a declaration allowing all exiles to return to their homeland.  The Jews will be led by Zerubbabel back to Jerusalem starting in 538 BC.  All of this was prophesied by Isaiah in Is 44:28 that God annointed and named Cyrus beforehand so he would know that his rise to power was due to the God of Israel.  Cyrus also funds the Temple's reconstruction.  Opposition from the non-Jewish inhabitants of Judea and local apathy delays its rebuilding until the time of the prophets Haggai and Zechariah in 515 BC. Ezra himself doesn't arrive on the scene until chapter 7, 458 BC, where he leads the second wave of returning exiles. Ultimately, Ezra's goal is for the nation to repent for their transgressions and recommit themselves to following the Law fully.
